It’s time to unpack the infinite potential of Apple TV 4 on tvOS 10 or 10.1 using the newly released LiberTV jailbreak.
Apple jailbreak community is buzzing with excitement ever since the sudden unexpected release of the LiberTV jailbreak tweak got released a few days ago. Since then many Apple TV users have been looking for an easy way to use LiberTV to jailbreak Apple TV on tvOS 10/10.1 version. But before going ahead with the jailbreak process, it’s important to note that this jailbreak is very much still in semi-tethered state and mainly aimed for developer community to prepare jailbreak tweaks for Apple TV. However, if you still want to go ahead, then follow the step-by-step guide below to learn how to get jailbreak working on your device.
Before starting the jailbreak process there are something you should have access to in order to properly jailbreak Apple TV using LiberTV.
- Apple TV 4 set-top box running on tvOS 10.0 or 10.1 – support for tvOS 9.1 comming later
- A Windows PC, Linux or MAC
- USB-C cable to connect Apple TV to computer
- Apple TV
- Cydia Impactor – download it from cydiaimpactor.com
- Liber TV IPA
How To Jailbreak Apple TV 4 on tvOS 10.0/10.1
Step 1 – Connect your Apple TV to computer using USB-C cable and power it on. Close iTunes if it opens up automatically upon Apple TV’s connection with computer.
Step 2 – Launch Cydia Impactor tool on computer and drag and drop the LiberTV IPA on the Cydia interface.
Step 3 – Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted. You won’t be allowed to enter you normal Apple ID password. Visit this link to request an app-specific password and enter it into the required field of the Cydia Impactor tool.
Step 4 – Wait for the liberTV.ipa to sideload on your Apple TV.
Step 5 – When done, unplug your device from computer and connect it to a TV via HDMI.
Step 6 – Launch the LiberTV app from home screen of your tvOS.
Step 7 – You will see a list of options on the next page, select all of the available options for best experience and hit the Do it! button.
Step 8 – This will start the jailbreak process. Some error may show up during the installation, simply ignore them by hitting OK on the prompt when message box appears on the screen.
Note that when you see ‘Unsupported KPP Layout’ error, select the Live on the edge option.
Step 9 – All done. Jailbreak is complete.
You can now SSH into your device with Dropbear, sideload apps, and do whatever you like. But we strongly advise against using nitoTV on jailbroken Apple TV as it could cause serious performance issues. Wait for the next update with the fix to this problem. Once again, this jailbreak is semi-tethered, you will need to follow the steps mentioned above all over again after every time you reboot or shut down your device.
