Boot Galaxy S8 and S8+ into Download and Recovery Mode – [Guide]

There is no physical home button on the new Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus smartphones and this has changed the way of booting device into the Download and Recovery modes on both handsets. With virtual home button now replacing the old physical button that many Galaxy owners have grown accustomed to, it has shaken things up a bit when it comes to performing routine tasks on flagship Galaxy phones. In this guide, we are going to show you how to enter Galaxy S8 / S8+ into Download and Recovery Mode for performing all sorts of device customization tasks.

Samsung provides Download and Recovery modes on its Galaxy phones that allow users to easily fix performance issues as well as make changes to the way device works based on individual preference. The download mode enables you to flash firmware on Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus using Samsung’s official Odin flashing tool for PC Windows and Mac. While the recovery mode has options which you can use to hard reset, factory reset, wipe device and cache data, sideload adb, OTA firmware updates, and much more.

Up until the Galaxy S8/S8+, booting into the download/recovery mode required pressing home button with the combination of volume and power keys. Since there is no physical home button on Galaxy S8/S8 plus, booting device into the download or recovery mode can be done by pressing volume up, plus volume down, and power button combination.

How to Boot Samsung Galaxy S8 into Download and Recovery mode

There are two ways to enter download and recovery modes on S8/S8+: one is via hardware key pressing method and the other is via software method which is useful if physical buttons aren’t responding or broken on your phone.

1 – Hardware key Combination Method

This first method involves pressing a key combination on Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus to enter device into the Download and Recovery mode.

Galaxy S8 / S8 Plus Download Mode

1 – Power off your Galaxy S8 or S8+ phone.

2 – Press and hold the Volume Down + Power keys simultaneously and keep pressing them until you see screen back on and release the keys.

3 – Now, when a warning message with yellow exclamation mark shows up on the screen, hit the Volume Down button to enter the Download mode.

4 – All done.

Galaxy S8 / S8 Plus Recovery Mode

1 – Power off your device.

2 – Press and hold the Volume Up + Power buttons at the same time until you see screen come back on. Release the Power button while keep pressing the Volume UP key until recover mode appears on the display.

3 – That’s all.

This will take you into the recovery mode from where you can perform different device management tasks. Remember touchscreen taps don’t work inside the recovery mode. Use volume up and down keys to navigate through different menus and hit Power key to confirm your selection.

2 – Software Method

If physical keys on your device are jammed, locked, broken, not responding for some reason, or you like software method of booting Galaxy S8 or S8+ into the download and recovery mode, then follow the steps below.

Recovery Mode

1 – First of all, make sure latest ADB and Fastboot drivers are installed on your Windows PC or Mac.

2 – Connect your device to computer.

3 – Open the command prompt on Windows or Mac and enter the following command:

adb reboot recovery

4 – That’s all.

Bootloader Mode

1 – Make sure ADB and Fastboot in installed on Windows PC or MAC desktop/laptop. This is important otherwise you won’t be able to enter commands in adb command prompt for entering your device into the bootloader/download mode.

2 – Connect your phone to computer via USB cable.

3 – Open command prompt on PC Windows or MAC. For that, go to the ADB folder on computer, right-click anywhere on an empty space inside the folder while pressing the SHIFT key and select Open command windows here from the contextual menu.

4 – Now, in the command prompt, type the command below:

adb reboot bootloader

5 – That’s all.
