Samsung has launched its first ever virtual voice and search assistant tool with the Galaxy S8 and S8+ smartphones to rival the likes of Google Assistant, Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa, and Microsoft Cortana. Virtual assistants are gaining rapid popularity among smartphone and PC users alike. After months of rumors Samsung finally unveiled its latest lineup of Galaxy phones to the world. This time there also came something new packed on the Samsung flagship phones’ firmware. And that’s the Samsung personal virtual assistant – Bixby.
For now, Bixby virtual assistant tool is only available on Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ phones. We are hoping to see it on other Android devices in near future.
Bixby is everything you would expect from a top personal assistant tool on a mobile device. It does all the usual tasks such as accepting voice command for opening apps, folders, setting, internet search, and lots more. It is also touch responsive and takes text commands. But it only comes with English and Korean languages for now. More language will hopefully be added in future updates.
Now, let’s move forward and see what are the amazing things that Bixby can perform on the new Galaxy smartphones.
List Of Best Bixby Features
Check out amazing things you can do with the new Samsung virtual assistant tool called Bixby for Galaxy S8 / S8+ phones.
Quick Shortcut to Launch Bixby
First thing first, how to launch Bixby quickly? You might be used to activate most other virutal assistant tools such as Apple Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa, Cortant using a voice command, however, this is not the case with Samsung’s Bixby virtual & personal assistant. There is a dedicated physical button to launch Bixby on the Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. It is situated on the left side of the device just below the Volume rocker key.
Simply, press and hold the Bixby button and start communicating with it to spell or type commands. To Launch Bixby Home, tap on dedicated Bixby button once. Furthermore, you can also use voice command to wake up Bixby, just like ‘Hey Siri’ and ‘Okay Google’ on Apple Siri and Google Assistant.
Use Bixby As You Like
On most other virtual assistant tools you can only enter text or give voice command at a time. But with Samsung Bixby assistant it’s possible to enter text, touch and voice commands all at the same time. For example, you can enter text to find information and then in the middle of the typing start giving voice command or tap search result and vice versa in random order. This is why Bixby gives the most seamless experience of any similar tool.
Bixby Vision For Camera
This is really a unique feature: until now, Samsung camera was used mainly for taking pictures and recording videos, but with Bixby Vision, you can use device camera to scan photos and search using visual hints.
Bixby Vision resembles Google Goggles in a lot of ways but with its own unique features as well. With Bixby Vision, all you need to do is to direct your camera at an object, scene or a location and Bixby will scan the image automatically. Once the scanning is done, you will see an array of button at the top of the interface explaining what to do next.
For now, Samsung has entered into partnership with a few app providers that work with Bixby Vision with the support for more apps expected to arrive in upcoming updates. It works with:
- Pinterest (for scanning images)
- Google Translate (for translating text in various languages). This really helps in a foreign country to read road sign, menus, directions, and other stuff.
- Amazon app (for shopping)
- Vivino (for searching Wine)
- Foursquare (to find our more about landmarks and places)
- Scanning QR and barcodes
- Find similar images
- Find nearby places to dine
To make things easier, all options are shown clearly as separate icons with text.
To launch Bixby Vision, go to your phone’s main camera app and tap on the Bixby icon at the bottom right corner. Or, you can open it via voice command by saying ‘launch Bixby Vision’.
Voice Command To Control All Device Settings
Samsung says that, “Anything you can do with touch on the phone, you can do with voice.” That’s not it, you can do more than just entering voice commands. Your device settings can be quickly adjusted and accessed via Bixby voice commands. This saves you the time wasted on tapping and navigating through several menus before reaching the exact place for that particular setting, which makes it a handy option to go to the settings that are not present on the quick settings menu on the home screen.
You can use traditional voice commands to change settings. For instance, you can utter “take the screenshot”, “increase brightness”, “take selfie”, and similar other commands. Also check out how to take a screenshot on Galaxy S8/S8+.
On a downside, Bixby doesn’t support internet searches for now. This is too vital a feature to remain absent, hopefully it will be incorporated into Bixby sooner rather than later.
Use Bixby To Manage Photos In Gallery
Samsung Gallery support has been integrated into the Bixby assistant tool. This feature is of great use when you want to access gallery and search for specific photos from thousands already saved on your device. All that is required is to command Bixby to show photos from gallery and its done. You can search gallery quickly access certain photos without having to scroll through the entire library. For example, command Bixby to “Show photos from trip to London” to see all photos from your visit to London.
Bixby has a feature that allows you to create a new album without opening the Gallery app. Just say “Create an album London”. You can also enter commands to see last captured photo, or to capture a selfie without touching buttons on the display.
We have already discussed Bixby Vision in detail above. There is one more thing that is extremely useful with Bixby Vision; apart from live photos, you can also use Bixby Vision for older images in your gallery.
To use this feature, open a photo in the gallery app, and tap on the Bixby Vision in the bottom-left corner of the interface after which a green dot will stick to the image showing that the image is ready to scan.
Now when the scanning is complete, you will see the same buttons for the live photos back on the interface.
Bixby Home works a lot like Google Home. It serves up information in the form of personalized cards. Bixby shows you relevant information in the form of, let’s say, weather, calendar, news, reminders cards. Moreover, it also works to show information cards for third-party apps like Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and others.
You can launch Bixby Home in two different ways:
- Swipe right from home screen to launch Bixby Home.
- Press the Bixby button located on the left side of the device to directly open Bixby Home.
Once launched, you can use Bixby to organize cards according to time, date, location, and other criteria. Bixby is based on advanced intelligence system which is powerful enough to learn user’s usage pattern and utilizes its predictive technology to provide most relevant suggestions and search results based on your likes and dislikes.
Well folks, i know it was a long post, but Bixby is really worth the time spend on knowing its amazing features. Beside above mentioned features, you can use Bixby for opening apps, play soundtracks and videos, set reminders, take screenshot, and much more.
Note: Bixby is still very much in beta testing phase, so don’t rule out chances of occasional errors and bugs.
